In Austin last week, The Woodlands High School senior Ian McPhearson, debated against 54 student competitors at the 6A level from across the state — first on the University of Texas at Austin campus, and then inside the state’s Capitol building during the two-day event--and won! The students prepare 3-minute speeches based on federal government legislation, such as trade policies or the Electoral College, and argue their positions in front of the other competitors. Students respond to each others’ statements in a way that models the democratic procedure, but McPhearson was the one

The much anticipated opening has finally happened! House of Pies Restaurant & Bakery opened its newest location at 1330 Lake Woodlands Drive. The Houston-based restaurant offers more than 40 types of pies and cakes in addition to a lunch and dinner menu that features sandwiches, soups, salads, chicken plates and steaks. The bakery is known for being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at its three other locations.

Due to predicted cold, rainy weather for the weekend of Jan. 18-21, officials with the Texas Department of Transportation are delaying a planned closure and repairs to the bridge deck on Interstate-45 overpass at the intersection of Rayford and Sawdust roads until Jan. 25-28.
The closure will be from 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25 to 5 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28, officials announced on Tuesday. The total closure of the southbound lanes of I-45 will now start at 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, and continuing through 5 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28.
